GRANITE

Granite is one of the most commonly known volcanic rock. Its usage area quite large that is suitable for kitchen worktops, tiles, flooring etc. Mostly, its using for kitchen worktop material on the other hand, granite is frost resistance so can be used outside too. Also, it is harder and less porous than marble therefore, it having been through more heat and pressure during its formation. WHAT IS GRANITE?

Granite is a igneous rock with large grains to be visible naked eye. It forms slowly from the crystallization of magma underneath Earth’s surface. Granite is usually composed of feldspar and quartz with a little bit of mica, amphiboles and other minerals. This composition amounts of minerals determines it color type such as; pink, grey, red or white color with dark mineral grains visible throughout the rock.

USES OF GRANITE

Paving, tiles, countertops, tile floors, stair treads, curbing, curling stones and more...

Granite is the most known and used stone that almost the same aged with the human being written history. People have used it for hundreds of thousands years as a construction material such as; a decorative stone or an architectural stone. Nowadays, it is used in buildings as a main materials both inside and outdoor decorations with various forms like polished granite slabs and tiles in countertops, floors and stair treads. But it is mostly used for kitchen worktops and outdoor flooring.

WHERE IS GRANITE FOUND?

According to what we have learned about natural stones so far, the granite can be found in all continents as part of the continental crust. This natural stone is found either in small, stock like masses spread over an area less then 100 km ² or as batholiths which are part of orogenic mountains range. Also, it occurs in localiths, dikes and sills.

Granite is mined worldwide but the most exotic colors are obtained from granite deposits in Brazil, India, China, Finland, South Africa and North America. China, Brazil and India are some of the leading granite producers in the world.

GRANITE IN TURKEY

Turkey has quite large natural stone reserves that are 40% in the world. There are 1 billion m³ of granite reserves in Turkey. Nowadays, it is extremely used in inside and outdoor decoration of buildings due to its smooth appearance, stability against external reasons and water resistance. It is possible to unearth granite from various parts of Turkey. Some of the most recent places are; Kapıdağ Peninsula, Kazdağ(Edremit), Uludağ(Bursa), Armutlu, Çavuşbaşı(İstanbul), Sancaktepe(Gebze), Kestanbol(Çanakkale-Ezine), Trakya(Kırklareli-Edirne), Çatalca, Istıranca, Sivrihisar(Eskişehir), Kırşhir, Gümüşhane, Giresun, Sivas and Zigana Mountain. They all have their own distinctive granite.

HOW IS GRANITE HARVESTED?

Granite Harvesting Process

Granite is one of the strongest rock of natural stones. Also it is know most beautiful and useful stone that can found in nature for both interior and external designs. So, if it is the strongest natural stone, how is this extraordinary material harvested?

01

Finding The Stones

Extraction companies look for the natural quarries all over the world to find an useful deposit of granite with the help of geologists. After finding it and removing dirt from surface of quarry area next step of harvesting can finally begin.
02

EXTRACTION PROCESS

After finding a good granite deposit and has been removed dirt from the quarry the work of extraction the stone can be start. Granite stones usually extracted as huge blocks with using special machinery. After that, next process is performs on huge granite blocks to transform them to portable small pieces.
03

CUTTING PROCESS

Once the granite is in small enough pieces, it goes to the next processing step to become first flat form as slab with using water sprayed and diamond wire used saw machine. And then it goes for polishing step for smooth surface and other detailed processes like rounding out the edges according to customers requirements.

After all these processes of harvesting of granite, prepared end products can finally meet their buyers in various colors.

DIFFERENT COLORS OF GRANITE

Granite is naturally includes various minerals and rocks such as; quartz, potassium feldspar, mica, amphiboles, and trace of minerals. These minerals that make up granite give it the unique colors we see in various types of granite. Due to the different combinations of minerals and various stones included granite can be in hundreds of different colors. On the other hand, according to their main colored surface we can list them under four main titles.

White Granite

White granite is a granite that is composed mainly milky white quartz and opaque white feldspar minerals.

Pink Granite

Pink granite is a granite includes mainly potassium feldspar and various small pieces of transparent milky quartz.

Black & White Granite

Black and white granite is includes equal amount of quartz, feldspar and amphibole.

Red Granite

Red granite is a granite that is composed mainly various of pink potassium feldspar and iron oxidate.

Granite has almost negligible porosity ranging between 0.2 to 4%.

Variegation

Granite shows consistency in color and texture.

Hardness

It is the hardest building stone and hardness of granite that lends it excellent wear.
